The video makes light of the names of some professional athletes, and while it is intended to be humorous, it is far from being politically correct. To better put this in perspective, it is relevant to note that 20th century American culture does not have a monopoly on unusual names.
Slate Magazine just recently posted a humorous and telling article concerning some of the most unsual and occasionally downright spiteful Puritan names of yesteryear: "A Boy Named Humiliation". If this article sparks your interest, feel free to check out Curiosities of Puritan Nomenclature, a comprehensive study of Puritan naming practices published in 1888.

I didn't find Key and Peele's sketch offensive or racist because they weren't directing it toward specific players.
ReplyDeleteI think Abstinence that if you are going to have a kid then make sure he's going to be pure. If not then you should abstain fro sexual contact.
Sebastian was a roman soldier that was shot by arrows for being Christian.
I found Key and Peele's skit to be offensive because they are making fun of something people cannot change.
ReplyDeleteObedience is definitely the most memorable because it describes how they lived, all obeying the church, and life rules
Charles comes from a theory which states it was derived from the german word hari which means warrior
You will now be known only as ChaCha Swagosorous.
DeleteAlthough funny, I did find the Key and Peele skit to be somewhat offensive. One cannot control the name he/she is given and therefore one should not be judged or picked on because of his/her name. I also found the skit to be racist in that some of the names and accents were aimed at a particular race.
ReplyDeleteThe memorable name for the article was Job-raked-out-of-the-ashes. This name reveals that Puritans named their children after the moral and beliefs. This name in particular represents the strong beliefs and religious teachings of the puritans because the name reminds one religious of the story of job. A story teaches about suffering.
My name, Joseph, comes from the Latin word Ioseph meaning “he will add.” The name Joseph has a very religious background coming from the Old Testament. Joseph was the name of the favorite son of Jacob that was send to Egypt by his brother. There he became the advisor to the pharaoh.
I found Key and Peele's sketch offensive. I also found it to be racist because they were making fun of people's accents and the way they talk. It was funny, but at the same time, their could be someone just like them and who knows, we might be laughing at them unknowingly, and hurting someone's feelings, which should make us feel guilty.
ReplyDeleteThe most memorable name in their was "Humiliation Hyde". It sounds awkward, it is alliteration with a tongue twister, and it has to do with Puritan culture because "Humiliation" had to do with telling about the world's pains, according to "A Boy Named Humiliation: Some Wacky, Cruel, and Bizarre Puritan Names".
KARTIK ISN'T EVEN IN THE WEBSITE! I asked my parents and it turns out that I was named after the god of war, Karthikeya, who was one of the most muscular and powerful and honorable gods in Hinduism. He is known for ruling South India thousands of years before the birth of King Ashok, and for killing Taraka, one of the most powerful demons. He has seven heads and four hands, with a trident in the first, spear in the second, and two hands for fighting and praying.
His warrior spirit is alive and well in you, Kartik!
DeleteThe scene from Key and Peele i found humorous, especially the end when they threw Conan in there. I thought that was pretty clever. Also it was not offensive towards me because i feel that they are making fun of football players names because these people that think they are going to be big shots change their names. As a few other students have mentioned "they have no control over their name" Well this isn't exactly true anymore. People change their names all the time to increase their "swag" value or to make them cooler. For instance, Calvin Cordozar Broadus, Jr...better know as Snoop Dogg changed his name twice! Once from his birth name: Calvin Cordozar Broadus, Jr to Snoop Dogg and then again to Snoop Lion. That was the most obvious example but i believe my point gets across.
ReplyDeletePraise-God Barebones... If a name gets any more Puritan than this please tell me immediately because this is the most ridiculous(if i may) name out there! I feel as though if Key & Peele were making a part three to their video, but this time they made fun of people’s religious names, this one would be the real knee-slapper for me.
My Mom and Dad decided to name me Samuel because they were big fans of author Samuel Clemens, also known as Mark Twain. But the best part of my name is the last. Brentari comes from Brenterini. Our family had to change our names because when we came in from Italy, where my ancestors lived they were constantly judged and shun...looked down upon. So they got rid of the super Italian name and now it is Brentari. Also, we are related to the Gambino's. I think that is very interesting because they were the very first mobsters to ever come about. My mom says not to go around saying that but i think it is the most interesting thing about my family. My grandfather is even in the mob or at least he was. He was the guy that would come up to your door and go for a handshake and then break every bone in that hand and then "kindly" ask you for last months payment
Snoop Lion<Snoop Dogg
DeleteIn my opinion, the Key and Peele sketch was offensive. Making fun of others is wrong but making fun of them over something they can't control is even worse. The sketch comes off as racist as well. Many of the "people" shown in the video were created according to the stereotypes of their race.
ReplyDelete"Joy-in-Sorrow" was the name I chose from the Puritan name article. This name stuck out to me because it shows how the Puritans named their children based off of their virtues and ways of thinking. This name represents the good that comes from the bad and would most likely belong to a child who's mother had difficulty with child birth.
I looked on the website but not much came up about my name. Only that my name is the 566th most popular name in the U.S. :') Anyways, I was named after a character from the soap opera "All My Children". The actress's name was Melanie but her nickname was Lainey and my mom thought it was adorable. So that's how I ended up with my name :)
Key and Peele's skit was somewhat offensive. I am sure they did not mean to offend people and were only trying to be humorous but making fun of the way people talk and things they cannot change, like their name, is offensive. It was a good intention with an offensive outcomes. To the public, this may look like harmless fun, but to those football players, it was rude.
ReplyDeleteIf-Christ-had-not-died-for-thee-thou-hadst-been-damned. Imagine having to write that at the top of all your papers! I understand wanting children to learn about God and how to be pure and holy and obedient, but this is really just cruel to name a child. How do you even call that child to dinner? This shows that Puritans would go to any length to make sure every single person was a god-worshiping citizen.
My name, Sophia, means "wisdom" in Greek. It's ranked number one in baby names for 2012, although when I was born it was not as popular. My parents named me Sophia because one of my deceased great aunts was named Sophia and it's some type of tradition to name your children after deceased relitives.
If-Chris, get thyself to the dinner table.
DeleteTo me the Key and Peele sketch was offensive to a certain degree, it did not offend me so badly that I never wanted to watch the show again or right some angry letter to them. In some of the cases their humor to some people would come off as offensive while they were just trying to make a joke out of something most people know, some people in professional football have some weird names. There sketch was not racist, the sketch built off of stereotypes of the certain races and took these stereotypes to the extreme just to show how ridiculous they are.
ReplyDeleteThe most memorable Puritan name from the Slate Magazine article to me would be Fear-God. The reason this name stood out to me was because of the way the Puritans lived. They were taught to respect God and that they had to go to church all the time because they were chosen by God to be the light in the dark, which is why the name Fear-God was extremely ironic and funny.
My first name (Brandon) came from a surname which was derived from a place meaning "hill covered with broom" in Old English. Broom is used in the definition of a type of bush. My last name (Murphy) came from an Irish surname which was derived from Ó Murchadha meaning "descendant of Murchadh". The name Murchadh is derived from the Gaelic muir "sea" and cadh "warrior".
In my opinion, I don't think that the Key and Peele sketch was that offensive. Of course I don't think it is right to make fun of someone for something they can't control, in this case their names. But this sketch was meant to be funny, not to hurt peoples feelings or be racist towards people. Their sketch was trying to represent how strange football players names have become over the past 10 to 15 years.
ReplyDeleteThe most memorable Puritan name to me was, Joy-in-sorrow. This name perfectly describes the Puritan culture. The Puritans love suffering and this name means that they are happy when they are sorrowful, which makes no sense at all.
My first name, Carly, means " little and strong" and it is of English origin. My parents named after one of my moms favorite singers, Carly Simon. My parents also thought that my first and last name flowed well together and they wanted me to have the same initials for my first and last name. Personally I like my name because it's simple but pretty and I'm happy I was named Carly.
You're so vain.
DeleteI personally did not find Key and Peele's sketch offensive, however others may, such as the people who do have uncommon names. Also, its not racist because people of all races have differnt or unique names. The sketch wasnt intended to be racist or mean, they were just joking about the odd names that pop up in football.
ReplyDeleteA Puritan name that I found interesting from the Slate Magazine article was the name "Praise-God." I found it interesting because it really sums up the Puritan culture in two simple words. The Puritans were people that valued hard work and worshipping or praising God. Those who didnt work to support themselves and didnt go to church were frowned upon.
Apparently theres a whole story behind my name that I didnt even know about until now. When my dad was younger he and his brother both had ponies named Blaze and Brownie. They kept the horses at another family's farm called the Ill family. The daughter of the family was named Kathy, but everyone called her Kate. My dad always liked the name Kate because he thought it was a pretty name. He did consider naming me Kailyn, without a t, but he decided Kaitlyn was better because then people could call me Kate. My mom agreed that it was a pretty name and so I was named Kaitlyn. My last name, according to the Behind the name website, means "from a surname which originally came from a place name that meant 'broad clearing' in old English." It also says that a World War Two American general was named Omar Bradley. Relatives have said before that we were related to a American WWII general.
I did not find Key and Peele's sketch offensive or racist. Comedians get the most laughs by making fun of people, they don't mean it in a bad way. They were just making a point that there are some strange names in football, and that they keep getting more...unique. Although you shouldn't make fun of someone on something that they cannot change, this sketch was not intended in that way.
ReplyDeleteFrom the Slate Magazine article, a Puritan name I found interesting was "Thanks." I found this interesting because it just really gets straight to the point. In Puritan Culture, they thank God for everything, their whole life was dedicated to worship.
My name, Vanessa means butterfly. There's literally a butterfly species called, Vanessa. But really, my Dad always told me that I was supposed to be a boy, and my name was supposed to be Vincent/Vinny, and he said Vanessa was the only thing close to that. My name is also ranked #122 in the United States. But what I find the most interesting, is that my last name, Simon, was originally "Simoncini," which is Italian. When my great-grandfather's family came to the United States from Italy, they had to change their last name because there was a lot of prejudice against Italians, so Simoncini, became Simon.
The skit by Key and Peele is offensive! As they mock the names of football players, the two comedians are rude and insulting because everyone is given their name rather than picking one. Ones name is just the same as their race since people are inevitably born with both. Thus, the mocking is just as disrespectful as racism and discrimination. Even though the harshness was unintended, the skit is judgmental and prejudice.
ReplyDeleteTo me, the most memorable name from the article was "Humiliation." Not only is this embarrassing to have, it shows various parts of Puritan culture. In this culture, they believed in predestination. Clearly, the name is to make the child aware of embarrassment and shame. This shows how members of this society were always in each other's business because the parents of this child must have believed that the most important thing to avoid in life is humiliation. The article also included that the man of the name, "Humiliation" had two children whom he both named this. The irony shows that because he was made fun of for this name, he tried to share his wisdom with both sons. This reveals the culture was very motivated to spread their values no matter how oddly they did it!
My name, Alexandra, is the feminine form of "Alexander" which means to defend men. I was named this because both of my parents wanted me to have a "power name," which they say is a male name for a female. It was shortened to "Alex" for this reason. Both my mother and father always wanted me to have a powerful name so when I am one day in charge of an organization, my name will be associated with strength. Overall, I love the name Alexandra because it is strong yet still elegant and feminine.
I did not find Key and Peele's sketch offensive. This is because i find humor in many things and am not offended easily.
ReplyDeleteI selected "Hand-Made" because it is quite humorous and could be interpreted many ways. Also, it shows that the Puritans take pride in their hard work.
Arthur has many meanings such as king, man, or bear.
The Key and Peele skit was not offensive to me. It was not racist at all, in fact. I truly believe that only a person who is LOOKING to be offended would find this skit offending and racist. These days everyone thinks everything is racist and makes a big deal out of everything. Is that really necessary? It's quite annoying, actually. I simply cannot be bothered with it.
ReplyDeleteAs soon as I came across the Puritan name, "If-Christ-had-not-died-for-thee-thou-hadst-been-damned," I struggled not to laugh! :D I had to call my mum over to see it because it was so funny. I suppose the length of the name was what got me. Also, their spiritualism is just insanity! That name is like a sentence long! Of course, "If-Christ-had-not-died-for-thee-thou-hadst-been-damned," was "Praise-God's" child (another name I couldn't help but giggle at). Puritans were just so wound up in their faith and their names clearly showed that.
My name is Машенька (Mashenka). Not many people know that. It is popular in Russia and Ukraine. Машенька means Maria in Russian (which is what I am called by most people who do not know me well). My common name is quite painful. Maria in English means "Sea of Bitterness." However, in Russia, my name describes someone with creativity and success. :) My friends and family call me Машенька. It is a sign of respect. Only my close friends call me Машa (Masha), which is a shortened and more informal version of my name. I actually prefer to be called by Машa by everyone, but it is easier for people to say my English name; Maria :( People probably wonder why I have the very Italian last name of Alletto. Well, honestly, I do not know EXACTLY why. But there are stories about it. My family has a history of mystery and secrecy. My daddy told me that there was a man in our family who looked different from everyone else...he was hiding from this group of people. He had to change his identity. He moved to Italy and started a new life there. He took on the common last name of Alletto and married an Italian woman. This covered him up temporarily. He eventually died (probably found and murdered). I do not think my family is from Italy for this reason. There was way too much fraud in my family. Ultimately, I take pride in Russia because I have Russian blood. And for the record, please call me Машa, I do not like my American name.
Is it pronounced "mash-uh" or "mosh-uh?"
DeleteKey and Peele's skit was very racist. The comedians were poking fun at black-american culture, but of course they will not get in trouble for this. This is because in todays society it is "acceptable" for a person to make fun of their own race but as soon as you poke fun at someone elses it's a huge deal. Offensive is offensive no matter what.
ReplyDeleteThe most memorable Puritan name would definitely have to be Humiliation. This just shows how miserable and god-fearing the Puritan society was. They believe humiliation was a trait to have in order to be a good puritan and deciple. What better way to instill this in your children then to name them this?
My name Maren is Norwegian and is derived from the latin term Marine which means "of the sea". My last name Ross is Scottish and refers to a popular area in Scottland.
Aye!

ReplyDeleteI did not find the Key and Peele skit offensive because it was meant to be funny. He was not making fun of specific football players just how ridiculous names have become in the last couple of years.
ReplyDeleteThe Puritan name i picked was "Silence".It shows how in the Puritan culture children did not have a voice in society and they were basically nothing.
My mom made up my name from different letters of my family members. The Y is for Yasmine, the A is for Janet, the R is for Kiara, the Eni is for Enid and the Ce is for Eunice my mom's name. She wanted my name to be different so she made it up herself.
Even though I found the Key and Peele skit very funny, it is also very racist. They make fun of names that would typically be found in the black race although since they are from the same race it makes it socially acceptable. But if one race was to make from another, it would be considered racist.
ReplyDeleteThe most memorable Puritan name was Joy and Sorrow. This describes Puritan society because they lived in constant joy and sorrow. Joy in The Lord and also so Sorrow in The Lord because they live in constant fear of him and their predestination.
Sarah is Hebrew for princess, my last name Meyers, is German for meiger, meaning high or superior. And oddly ironic my parents picked my name only because they liked the song "Sara smile" by Hall and Oates.
Nothing wrong with Hall and Oates!
DeleteI found the Key and Peele skit slightly offensive because they were mocking people for something they have no control over. In a way, I do consider it racist. The fact that people believe that they can mock their own race and not be considered racist is ignorant. I consider this equivalent to a white person saying they have black friends so they can't be racist which is completely untrue. Why does society find it socially acceptable to belittle people at all ? The support of racism may have been eradicated in most of the country but videos like these, force me to wonder how many other people feel the same way and don't view this as a "skit."
ReplyDeleteThe most memorable Puritan name was Anger. This name really stood out because I can only imagine the anger a person could feel living in a Puritan community. Everyone was extremely oppressed and they had to live their entire life believing that no matter what they did, they could still go to Hell. I would be angry about that as well. Life, liberty, and property were all taken away from the Puritans and they became bitter after being persecuted by England. The Puritans were infuriated by the fact that so many other religions were corrupted by evil whereas they were left untainted. Therefore, I believe that the idea of a "city upon a hill" stemmed from the Puritans' anger at society. It almost served as a comfort to the Puritans after seeing their parents persecuted.
My name has no significant meaning. My mom's name is April so she wanted something close to her name but not exactly the same so I could have my own identity. By swapping the "l" with an "a," I was created ! Well, Apria was created.
P.S. I'm really sorry that I couldn't get it in by the deadline. I honestly completely forgot about it and I couldn't keep my eyes open long enough to remember. But I promise it won't happen again.
I do not find Key and Peele's sketch offensive, i think it is just jokes and should not be taken so seriously. The sketch does have a racist undertone but i think in all comedy there is crud humor because its what makes people laugh.
ReplyDeleteThe most two memorable puritan names in my opinion are Wrestling and Die-well. I could not believe people actually named their children like this, but what this reveals to the world about the puritans is that they wanted to be unique. They believed their way of life would carry on for generations and by having such different names they were ensuring that they would be set apart from everyone else.
My first name is Samiyah and it is of Arabic origin, in 2012 it was ranked 821 in popular baby names fro girls. The meaning of Samiyah is elevated, and exalted.
I do not think that Key and Peele's skit was offensive. Although it attacked the person's name, which they cannot control, they did not target any specific player. Besides, everyone needs to laugh at themselves every once in a while.
ReplyDeleteThe most memorable Puritan name to me had to be If-Christ-had-not-died-for-thee-thou-hadst-been-damned. This shows how extremely seriously they took their religion, so far as to name their child something so unconventional as this.
My name does not have much significant meaning. My first name, Kyle, means "narrows, channel, strait". It is a Scottish surname. My last name derives from the Welsh RHYS, which means "enthusiastic".
Key and Peeles skit was offensive. It was making fun of something people do not decide on themselves. Your parents name you and you don't have much of a say over what you want your name to be. It is racist in some ways. The fact that they used an accent for the Middle Eastern guy is racist. There was not a reason for making fun of people's names.
ReplyDeleteThe most memorable Puritan name for me was abstinence. It shows just how serious the puritans were with their religion. Abstinence is a big part of religion and it is actually a commandment. Abstinence is the name I will remember.
My first name, Nathan means he gave in Hebrew. It is also a son of king David. It is the number one name in France. My last name Harring isn't on the website. I know that it is German and my ancestors came from Germany. My parents named me Nathan because they liked the name.
Jamie Hutter
ReplyDeleteAfter watching Key and Peele's skit I did find it offensive and somewhat racist. Although, they are not directing it at any specific players, it is still something that the players are not able choose.
The most memorable name in the article would have to be What- God- will. This name stuck out to me because in the Puritan Society they believed in predestination. In the name What-God-will predestination is exactly what is being talked about.
My name Jamie Lynn comes from my grandparents names. Jamie came from my Grandpa, James and Lynn comes from my Grandma, Linda. As for my last name, it is very uncommon. However after doing research I found that the meaning of Hutter may come from a craft, such as the name "Brewster" which refers to a female brewer.
Jon Ng
ReplyDeleteI didn’t really find that key and peele’s sketch offensive or racist at all. If they tried to imply the video as either racist or offensive, they would have been more serious and disdainful about the subject, but on the contrary they were making goofy faces and looks to make people laugh. Like friends who play and tease each other, they probably have friends in the NFL because they are well known anyways.
“If-Christ-had-not-died-for-thee-thou-hadst-been-damned” what a name to be called, just imagine if we had a friend named that we probably make so many abbreviations up. I understand that the Puritans wanted to remind the children of that town of their religious believes, but if you name a child that they will be basically be reminded every day. I personally don’t want my name to be “The Enlightened one that knows all balance and peace” this is in Buddhism.
Jonathan what a generic name, my father claims that he got the name because is sound as if it is extremely mescaline and it get the most attention, but I personally think he just went to baby’s name website and press a “random” button to pick the name out. The name itself is Hebrew; Jonathan was the eldest son of Saul and a friend of David that is basically what I know about my first name. I don’t know what my last name means at all.
Giana Johnson
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, the Key and Peele sketch was a little offensive. Making fun of someone is one thing but making fun of someone’s names. They were given there name, they did not get to choose. I felt the skit was a little racist because some of the names were made according to the stereotypes of their race. I didn’t feel as though the skit was neither funny nor necessary.
“Abuse-not” is the name I choose for the Puritan name culture. This name caught my eye because we can see that the puritans named their children based on their morals and ways of thinking. The parents of “Abuse-not” obviously did not want him to be abusive but the total opposite, Kind, calm and gentle with one another.
My name means “god is gracious” and its origin is of Italian and Hebrew. My parents got my name from watching the wheel of fortune. Vanna White named her daughter Giovanna but my dad knew it was Italian and shortened it to Giana. This is irrelevant but my dad chose my name and ever since I was born we’ve been really close. J
Robert Bahgat
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, I do not find the Key and Peele sketch offensive. All it's doing is just making a bunch of names that are really funny and are connected to football players, this sketch is pretty funny though. No, it isn't racist either, this skit is not making fun of anyone's race it's just poking fun at some ridiculous names in football.
The name I chose from the Slate magazine article was the name, "Experience." To me, this name reveals that the Puritans thought life was just one big experience. Also, I thought this name showed that Puritans experienced a lot of different things throughout their life even though they didn't have the best lives.
I went on Behindthename.com and found out some pretty cool stuff about my name, Robert. The usage of my name is English, French, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, German, Dutch, Russian, Croatian, and Ancient Germanic, which is a huge array of countries in Europe. In the United States I have the 61st ranked name and also, my name is from the Germanic name Hrodebert which means "bright frame."
I do not find the Key and Peele sketch to be offensive or racist at all. They do not direct it to any certain person or background. They just create funny names and say them in funny voices.
ReplyDeleteThe name that i chose from the magazine article was fly-fornication. To be completely honest, i have no clue why in the world somebody would give their child such a horrible name. Hopefully there were no fly-fornication juniors.
According to behindthename.com the usage of my name is Irish and English. I have the 26th ranked name in the United States, also my name is from the Irsh name O Riain which means "little king."
Personally, I did not find Key and Peele's sketch racist. To the poorly attempted accents and outrageous costumes, it was almost too ridiculous to be found racist. However, I do understand how some may take it to heart, for they are mocking something people cannot control. It would be the same thing as ridiculing someone for their appearance or their sexual orientation; it's just unfair and it makes you a bully.
ReplyDeleteThe most memorable name from the article was, "No-merit". It shows that Puritans believed that their children had no significance and were completely useless to them (talk about harsh). According to the article these types of names were supposed to "remind children of the pain of the world", but honestly it only reminded them of how exceptionally cruel Puritan parents were.
The reason behind my name has nothing to do with its meaning at all. Every single person on my dad's side of the family starts with a "T" so, to keep up with the tradition, my aunt named me after her favorite movie at the time, 'Breakfast at Tiffany's'. The Greek meaning of my name is "manifestation of a God" which is great and all, but it doesn't exactly represent me.
I found the Key & Peele sketch somewhat offensive. They weren't directing the comments to any person or ethnicity in particular, however you can't make fun of someone for their name or race. A persons race is not something that they can control or change, however not being able to control the name they are given, they can certainly change it. Although the sketch was comical, many people may find it offensive.
ReplyDeleteThe name that I found most memorable from the Slate Magazine was "No-Merit". Honestly, i feel really bad for whichever child was named this. If i was him/her i would attempt to legally change my name and would most likely be really mad at my parents. Having that name would make me feel as if my parents thought that i did not matter or was worthless.
So on the Behind the Name website, my name did not come up with a meaning, most likely because of the spelling. So, i googled "the meaning of the name Karlee", sadly, what came up on sheknows.com was "The name Karlee is a baby boy name". That was pretty weird because I would never think of a boy having the name Karlee. Apparently the name Karlee is German and i am only like 1/8 German. However, Karlee means "womanly or strength", once again I can not see Karlee as a boy's name. According to thinkbabynames.com, the meaning of Karlee is "free man", and considered a girls name. The name Karlee, spelled the way I spell it, was a very uncommon name. So the story of how i got my named is pretty sweet, at least I think it is. My mothers father passed away from leukemia when my mother was only 10 years old. His name was Charles, but he liked to be called Charlie and also signed it Charlie. When he signed his name in cursive it looked like Charlee since he looped his i's and hardly dotted them. So, my mom's brother's name is Charles, and he has one daughter, his oldest. My parents named me Karlee, after him, and my uncle chose Charlee for his daughter. I was a triplet and every time a baby was lost, they changed my moms due date. When there was only one baby left, me, my mom's due date was changed to September 17th, my grandfather's birthday. So, my mom wanted to name me Charlee. That same day, my uncle had called and said that they were having a baby girl and wanted to name her Charlee, after my grandfather. So, my cousin was named Charlee and I am Karlee. My grandfather was very musical, so i think that is where i got my love of music.
Lovely story!
DeleteI do not think what they were saying was racist or hurting anyone. Their act was just a way to show the ridiculous names that have been showing up. I took no offense in seeing this video because i found it really funny.
ReplyDeleteThe name "If-Christ-had-not-died-for-thee-thou-hadst-been-damned" really sticks out for me because it allows me to realize that they were really strict on religion and views in the world. If a child was named this then there must of been strong believers.
My name means french, catalan, and welsh and it is pronounced "mahrhk" which is french. This name is not popular in the United States but it is very normal in Catalonia since it is the first name that they pick to use. In Spain there are a lot of people who call themselves Marc too. The other way to spell my name which is Mark is more common.
I did not find Peeles sketch to be offensive because it was not meant to be rude or offensive but meant to be funny and make people laugh.
ReplyDeleteI chose the name Prudence from the Puritan name article. The reason why the name stuck out to me was because it showed how the Puritans were very cautious and afraid of making mistakes or bad judgments.
My first name Laiba means Angel of heaven. My mom named me this because she had a dream where she met a girl named Laiba and really liked the name.
I did not find Key and Peeles Skit offensive or racist because they didn't use any actual names of any professional players and the skit was purely made for a humorous situation.
ReplyDeleteThe puritan name i remembered the most was remember, this name signifies that the puritan way of life was simple and they didn't use sophisticate tools like our modern day internet. Also, there were many other names for instance die well which shows how the puritans were holy people and how they feared god.
My name Riley has two meanings the first one from an old English word that meant rye field. Also, Riley is a surname of the Irish name Reilly which seems likely to me because both my mom and dad have Irish ancestry.
Key and Peeles skit was very racist. Although they had an amusing sense of humor about their own race, if one race was to make fun of another, it would be frowned uponed and considered racist. Because they are their own race they feel it's right that they're able to without being criticized.
ReplyDeleteAlexis Sutley
The most memorable Puritan name was fear-not. This was because Puritans were fearful of God. Considering they have such strong faith in The Lord they don't fear other things.
My first name, Alexis, is Greek and means helper, or defender. Throughout years, Sutley has been an unexplained last name.
I kinda of do take Key & Peele's sketch offensive because it's not their fault that person has a " different " name, it's out of the ordinary, their parents were just thinking out of the box. Also, it is racist because many americans have " regular" name that isn't out of the ordinary. Mostly Africans, Indians, Mexicans, chinese, people have those names but there names mean things to them or about since it's their name.
