Ted Talk Thursday (Or Friday, in this case. Sorry.)

Communication is the concept that drives writing and speaking alike. One simple way to improve your writing is to ensure that both of these very human processes are not divorced from one another.

Any essay written in this class should sound clear when read aloud.

Read aloud all of your writing before submitting it as finished.

To continue your familiarization with rhetoric and effective communication, we will indulge in a weekly viewing and analysis of a TED Talk.

Let's kick it off this week with a speech with "On Getting Up Again," a speech delivered by Rodney Mullen, one of the most innovative professional skateboarders.

Here's some weekend viewing: "Pop an ollie and innovate!":

Your Task: Watch Rodney's second video, and identify what rhetorical devices and appeals he uses in his speech. Analyze their effectiveness.

  • Post your analysis as a comment to this post [Your comment must begin with your name!]
  • Comments must be posted before class on Monday (10/5).

  3. Rodney Mullen uses all three appeals within his speech. He first uses ethos, citing a credibility, when he talks about how people take what other people do and take it further. He next uses pathos, an emotional plea, when he explains to the audience how everyone has their own type of fame, and how he is not worthy of his fame or his success. He then uses logos multiple times. He first uses logos by using logic to explain different ways the board works, and how a skateboard can turn every which way to accomplish different tricks. He uses logos again further in his speech when he talks about different skateboarding tricks again, but this time, he explains how each trick has their own movement that the body should make.
Throughout his speech he also uses a lot of rhetorical devices. He uses anecdote multiple times. He does this by constantly bringing up his past and talking about his skating history and all the different competitions he won. He also uses a lot of pedantic by continuously using overly scholarly words. He then uses some personification. For example he says, “context shapes content.” Another example would be when he talked about doing freestyle skateboarding and said it took five years to die. These show personification because context can’t physically shape content, and freestyle skateboarding can’t literally die. He uses some simile too. He does this by saying skateboarding is like surfing. He uses simile again when he says no matter how good someone is at something you can always get better, and getting better is like polishing a turd. He then uses a hypophora when he asks, “what is popularity?” he later answers his own question with, “not much, pure respect.” He uses a lot of imagery also, but mostly uses it when he talks about his surgery, and explains what he experience. He lastly uses repetition at the end of his speech when he says, “drive and drive and drive.”

In this episode of TED Talks, Rodney Mullen uses all three appeals. He uses ethos when he is showing his videos. He talks about creating all these new moves and by showing the videos he’s showing us proof. Pathos is another appeal he uses by talking about how skaters look for belonging. Rodney talks about how he never felt like he fit in but skating helped him do that. Another instance where he uses pathos is when he talks about how he lost everything. After street skating dies he says he loses everything. His last use of appeal is logos. He explains how the board works a lot of the time. He says that if it comes out from under you it will go forward or backward.

Rodney uses a lot of figurative language too. He scatters anecdotes throughout his speech about when he was a little boy and things that have happened to him. When he talks about a wall beckoning him it is personification because the wall is not literally calling him. One of many similes used in the episode is when he says skating is like surfing. This could also be an analogy but he also says that skating is just like technology. He says that you can make technology whatever you want, and make it do something it’s not supposed to just like you can with a skateboard. Lastly, he paraphrases someone that once said a Nobel Prize is like a tombstone on your work. This is like saying once you get a Nobel Prize your light inside you dies and you don’t have passion to do what you want anymore. This episode teaches a lot of things and does it indirectly.

He uses logos when showing the videos, but he also infers to the body as using motor functions when finding a trick that goes with a new spot.

Ethos: Uses videos to show he skateboards. This gives him credibility

Anecdote: Goes into a story about how he had knee surgery, and then was watching these guys skateboard and he tried a trick, and realized that if his knee was injured more it wouldn't be a big deal, he would just have to get more work done by the doctors the next morning

    Litotes: "They were not comfortable"

Homily: Talks about not giving up if you receive bad news, but to figure out what you can do with the news

Ethos: He explains that the basic ethos of it is to take what someone gives you and make it into your own, and then contribute it to the community.

  11. The rhetorical device that Rodney used in his speech was didactic. He gives the audience information about some skating tricks, and at the same time demonstrating it to them so that the audience could understand it better.
Rodney used ethos as an appeal. To persuade his audience, he shared his knowledge about skating and how beautiful the “sport” is, and most of his statements and reasons made sense.

Rodney Mullen uses rhetorical devices and appeals in his video. He uses logos when he explains how to do a dark slide and other tricks like a primo. He uses pathos when he talks about how skaters are "outsiders who just want to belong". In this instance he reached out to skaters who could relate. He also used it when he spoke of a biography he read that really spoke to him. Rodney uses ethos several times during the video when he shows videos of himself doing tricks and then proceeds to do a trick on stage. He uses polysyndeton, and is very pedantic, when he describes things. Rodney uses anecdotes when he tells a story of when he got escorted off campus and sucked at these "new skate parks".

Pathos- Rodney Mullen uses pathos here by emotionally explaining how to contribute to the skating community. “The greater the contribution, the more we express and form our individuality. Which is so important to a lot of us who feel like rejects to begin with…”

Hypophora- “What is it to hack, right? It’s knowing a technology so well…” He answers his own question, he does this to gain the listener’s attention and get them thinking.

Allegory- Rodney Mullen compares individuality and contribution to the skating world to hacking a computer. “ It’s knowing a technology so well that you can manipulate and steer it..” He compares this to skating by saying if you want to become “famous” in the skating world you need to know what parts and skills to put together.

Ethos- “We’ve all had some degree of fame, in fact i’ve had so much success that i strangely feel so unworthy…” Rodney uses pathos here to show the audience that he does know what it takes to be successful.

    Rodney Mullen uses:
-Ethos: by showing the videos of him skate boarding as well as telling some anecdotes and in them he mentions the different competitions he won, letting the audience know he is very accomplished
-Anecdote: He uses this a few times first he tells the audience about his childhood and some of the competitions he won. He tells the story of his surgery and a trick which he did before his surgery
-Logos: He explains different tricks and the way skate boarding is always evolving with different skate boarders.
-Pedantic: At times he uses big words instead of their simplified version.
-Hypophora: He asks: "What will continue to drive you drive you?" He then makes reference to some of the communities he mentioned and eventually answers the question
-Anaphora: when talking about his company he says that it became important and then, it fell and then, it was the best again, and then he sold it, and then he sold it again.
-Pathos: Every time he mentioned skate boarding he said how its kept him humble with him having to go from the best to the worst, as well as how he felt when he was winning and how liberated he felt after not having to defend himself as champion.
-Simile: " It's like a cartoon, the falls"
-Personification: when talking about how he did a 360 flip on a wall he tells the audience how he decided to do it and what he was thinking about by saying " That's (the wall) begging for a 360 flip".
All of these devices used together helped get a point across which was that skate boarding is centered around creativity of both the moves and the people who perform them because while doing so they show those whom are watching them that skate boarding involves more than just rolling a board. It seemed as if everyone present understood that because Rodney was able to establish a connection with his audience by being both comedic at times, as well as serious. And everyone understood that skateboarding in a sense was a manifestation of that person.

  21. Ethos- He states his credibility by showing his highlights. He also talks about how hes been skating for a while.
Ethos- Explains why he is called the god father of modern street skating
Logos- Because freestyle skating died, he no longer stressed about winning championships.
Logos- When coming up with tricks, he would just look at other tricks and think about possible variations he could make of the same trick
    Litotes "Its not that hard"
    Anaphora"or 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 movements"
Pathos- talks about how skaters just want to belong and want respect
Pathos- Talks about how they want to give back to the community, even though they feel like rejects to begin with
extended simile- compares hackers to skateboarders, says that not all hackers are bad, just like how not all skateboarders are bad.
logos- in order to innovate, we must take other peoples ideas and make them better, and once we make them better, then we give them back to the community.
Pathos- Even with all the fame in the world, or all the money in the world, the one thing that drives us is respect.
ethos- winning can over ride your passion to have fun and be creative
Pathos- Being famous and wealthy is not what matters most to him, but watching people do what he created and seeing his impact on the community is what's most important.

Rodney Mullen ends up using all three types of appeals and numerous rhetorical devices. He started off with ethos, where he cites his experiences of creating new skateboarding tricks. Additionally, he uses many videos and clips on him or other people performing the specific moves that he recently told the audience. Next was pathos where he showed his emotions while explaining the emotional moments such as the knee injury or when he is explaining the thrill of making these tricks. Finally, he used logos to explain the thought process he had with these tricks. For instance, he says that once a new trick comes out, then there are more moves that can be made from the last trick. He also explained how each trick worked such as the 360 flip where he flipped the skateboard in a 360 degrees circle and landing back onto the board. He explains how every trick has sub-movements that leads up to the finale, which is the trick as a whole.

Rodney Mullen also uses many anecdotes throughout his speaking. Some examples are his knee injury story where he wanted to perform this trick the day before his surgery, so he was going to do it since if he breaks it more, then the doctor would have to work more. Furthermore, he used figurative language such as the numerous similes. An example would be "like a cartoon." which was used in near the start of his speech. Rodney also used pedantic words such as individualism when describing how each skateboarder has their differences in the method they skate in.

Anecdote- Rodney tells multiple mini stories about his experiences with skateboarding and how he got to create many different types of techniques.
Polysyndeton- He uses the word "and" repetitively "You have a signature board and wheels and shoes and clothes."
Didactic- He describes thoroughly to the audience about the spins and tricks he does on his skateboard, for example, the dark slide primo slide.
Anaphora- Rodney repeats the beginning phrase, "It's at the heart of...". "It's at the heart of engineering, it's at the heart of a creative community, an innovative community"
Diacope- "...very similar communities, very similar"
Chiasmus- "I respect what they do, and they respect what I do"
Ethos- "I had won 35 out of 36 contests that I'd entered over 11 years"
Pathos- Rodney tells the audience about the time he had surgery on his knee and says, "You are so helpless, right?"

Polysyndeton: “Drive, and drive, and drive, and drive.”

Anecdote: Explains a lot about his past and gives short descriptions about his experiences. Ex: “I grew up on a farm.”

In the video, "Pop an Ollie and Innovate!," Rodney Mullen comes across a frequent amount of rhetorical devices and appeals. Mullen uses Ethos in a few different ways, such as when he shows clips of him skateboarding in the beginning, he stated his childhood and how he lived on a farm, he stated his numerous winnings in championships, he also reminded the audience of his nickname,"The Godfather of Modern Street Skating." Also, Rodney uses Pathos when he uses a metaphor "Pronouncing dead," and he introduces a disgusting phrase, "humbling and rotten," and "feels like passing a turd," also he speaks on determination when he describes how he woke up and the first thing he did was to try again, to add on he discussed on humor because he was escorted out of the campus many times, lastly he spreads hope when he mentioned the contribution to the community. Logos is introduced when Rodney Mullen speaks on how the normal guys would do stuff very different from him, since he was famous people expected him to have a high skill level of performance, when you hit a wall you fall forward, tricks are made of sub movements, which is combining multiple tricks, hacking is knowing technology so well that you van manipulate it, lastly talent lives on from being able to pass it on. The few rhetorical devices that i found included; an anecdote, when he talks about his knee surgery and an anaphora when he talks about the multiple tricks being used in a sub movement, "1 or 2 or 3 or 4."

Mullen used Pathos when he told his story of the knee surgery he got and how he would just have to work harder. Logos is used through a similie when he states hackers are like skateboarders. You can take a program and use it the way it was meant to be, the same way you can take a skateboard and go from point A to point B. On the other hand you can alter the program like you can do tricks and variations on a skateboard.

Rodney Mullen used all three form of appeal during his speech. First he used ethos, he showed many clips and small edits of him riding. He also went on to talk about how many championships he had won. Rodney also used pathos by stated that he wasn't worthy of winning all of his championships, also he said that became to much to handle. Another way that he used pathos was by saying that winning championship changed and all he really did was defend his title. He expressed to us that he once had a company and that he had a signature board and wheels but they were taken off the shelf Later Rodney used logos when taking about how we can learn tricks but then change then to fit us and to creat new and better tricks. Rodney also used personified that one street curve. He said "it's just beckoning to bank trick done on it".

  52. Rodney Mullen uses all 3 appeals throughout this video. One of the three he used was Ethos, citing his credibility by showing his skating skills through videos and talking more about them to give the audience a better understanding. Another one he uses is Pathos, he continuously mentioned how being a Pro Skater has shaped him into a humble person. Like all skaters, he learned how to see that falling was the only way to learn that you had to keep trying to get what you wanted. Falling was seen by most skaters, as the norm in skater cause that is the only way to become a skater. Finally another one is Logos, and he uses this one by explaining everything he would show or discuss to the audience so they could understand his point of view of being a skater better. Including how the board "works," and how to do tricks
